Series: Tokyo Ghoul

Personality: The first thing to say about Banjou is that he is usually a pacifist. This is a trait extremely unusual for a ghoul and it puts him at a rather severe disadvantage. Pacifist ghouls happen from time to time, but the other examples of them have a tendency to be young children or mothers with young children, not muscular men who look like they can hold their own in a fight. Arguably he could probably do a better job of it against a human who doesn't have a ghoul's speed and regeneration, but even that is debatable.

Tied to the fact that he's a pacifist is the fact that not only does Banjou prefer not to fight other ghouls, he also dislikes violence of any kind and it's implied that he isn't the sort of person who would go around attacking humans despite the need to eat people in order to live. More than likely, he's relying on handouts or otherwise eating the remains of other ghoul's kills and while this is met with derision from other ghouls-- even his followers comment on how weak he is, though he seems content to remain a pacifist. That being said, he is part of the group who rescues Kaneki from Aogiri so even though he can't fight he still wants to help.

Banjou is shown defending Rize despite the fact that she has been indiscriminately killing and endangering the other ghouls in the Ward. He's even warned not to "spoil her" and spends most of his conversation with her admiring her for not caring about the rules as well as being stronger and smarter than him. Becoming the leader of the 11th Ward was something spurred by Rize calling him "leader." He did it reluctantly, but the fact that he tried at all says something about his level of infatuation; had she not given him the title, jokingly or otherwise, he probably wouldn't have bothered.

While he's normally a fairly collected and even tempered individual, there are certain things that can set Banjou off. When he thinks that Kaneki is Rize's boyfriend, he gets ridiculously angry over it, mostly out of jealousy. He doesn't like getting angry, but when he does his reaction is rather over the top. Once he's calmed down, he feels awful about it and is extremely quick to apologize for losing his cool to the point where he normally over apologizes.

Banjou is certainly not loyal to every ghoul he meets, but the people who do earn his loyalty tend to be people who are just as loyal to Banjou as he is to them. There's a lot to be said about how trusting his is of his followers. He'll literally throw himself in front of people who are about to be injured to take the brunt of the attack, though this won't help him in the setting. Especially if the people about to be injured are kids, who seem to be a huge weakness of his. This is possibly indicative of him having a rough childhood, something that is extremely common for ghouls as most live on the streets to avoid direct contact with humans.

Despite his loyalty Banjou has been around long enough to recognize certain types of people. Kaneki and the Anteiku ghouls struck him as good people, but working for Aogiri Tree gave him a window into how really brutal ghouls operate even more so than working for the former ghouls of the 11th Ward did. He's likely to keep people he doesn't know very well at a distance, at least until he figures whether or not he can trust them after which he'll either warm up to them or decide they're someone he needs to keep a close eye on.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
✓ Protective: Banjou is shown throwing himself in harm's way to protect people on multiple occasions. Even though he has no business trying to fight, he will go out of his way to help people, especially children.
✓ Leadership skills: Despite being a weak ghoul, Banjou has a very loyal group of followers. They know he's weak and he knows they know he's weak, but they still follow him. He's charismatic enough to get together a group of ghouls who don't want to all kill each other and unite them under a single banner, and this works fine for a while until Aogiri shows up in the 11th ward and very easily overpowers Banjou. He's not physically strong, but he was able to form an alliance that holds even after he loses control of the ward.
✓ Idealism: Banjou genuinely believes that it's possible for ghouls to get along with each other in spite of his species' violent tendencies. He favors peace and will try to find a nonviolent solution to problems. When faced with the knowledge that he and his followers all wanted out of Aogiri, he picked the safest solution of running the hell away. Even if he was stronger, he would be likely to attempt the nonviolent option, though he still knows better than to try this with every ghoul he meets.
✓✗ Loyalty: While in normal circumstances this would be more of a good thing than a bad thing, Banjou is incredibly loyal to people he considers friends, as seen by the fact that he will put himself in danger for them if he has to be. As ghouls have a tendency to kill each other over turf wars or really for no reason at all, loyalty is often seen as a sign of weakness. Trusting Kaneki, for instance, could have gone horribly for him but he was a good enough judge of character to figure out that Kaneki is genuinely trustworthy.
✗ Doesn't know how to fight: Banjou doesn't know how to use his kagune. At all. This is one of those times where you look at him and wonder "How have you survived for so long?" Considering the fact that kagune are a special organ that ghouls instinctively know how to use, the fact that he doesn't know how to use his (or even what it looks like) is a sign of just how outmatched he is by every other ghoul he meets. Upon first meeting Kaneki, he is knocked unconscious by a single blow and this isn't because Kaneki is strong.
✗ Uneducated: part of growing up as a ghoul means that he isn't the best at blending in with human society, instead mostly growing up on the street amongst other ghouls. He was never formally educated and as a result was never given many chances to learn things beyond general knowledge. He doesn't have much in the way of working knowledge about human society and is functionally illiterate.
✗ Bad taste in women: Banjou is in love with Rize, which is absolutely ridiculous for a number of reasons. First and foremost, Rize brought chaos to the 11th Ward and there's also the fact that she slaughtered every single ghoul that attacked her right in front of Banjou and he still decided right then and there "yes, this is my ideal woman."
✗ Ghoul: The most obvious weakness of is would be the fact that Banjou is a ghoul. That comes with a few positives: being able to regenerate is extremely useful, and Banjou's regeneration skills are above that of the average ghoul, and having an organ called a kagune made out of Rc cells (cells that "flow like blood" but which can become incredibly hard like teeth) that ghouls can use to both attack others and defend themselves with. There is a serious caveat to these abilities: ghouls can only eat human flesh, though they don't need to do so as often as a human would, being capable of surviving by hunting once a month or so. All human food tastes terrible to ghouls and they are incapable of digesting it with one exception: coffee. Ghouls can drink coffee to take the edge off of their hunger for a brief period of time, but the longer they go without eating, the larger the risk of losing control of themselves until they eat again.

Of course, being a species that goes around eating people isn't something that goes unnoticed so ghouls prefer to be incredibly secretive to avoid detection by the CCG, known to the ghouls as doves, who hunt down and kill ghouls who end up on their radar. Since all ghouls have to eat people, the CCG doesn't distinguish between pacifist ghouls who don't hunt and ghouls like Rize who slaughter dozens of people at a time. This means that not only is it in Banjou's best interest to stay hidden, but that he is going to have a very rough time adjusting to human life because he'll be incredibly hesitant to try eating actual food for fear that it will make him ill.

First Person Sample:
[There's a moment of shaky cam and a nice view of the sky before it settles on a slightly annoyed looking man.]

Can someone explain something to me? What the hell is this guy supposed to be?

[The camera shifts onto a napping Bidoof. It doesn't seem to notice that the man is unhappy, but it's possible that it's ignoring him intentionally given the slight twitching of its ears when he speaks.]

It came out of the ball thing when I pressed the button. How does an animal fit into a tiny ball? It doesn't hurt it any, does it?

[It seems for him, the more pressing matter is whether or not the Bidoof being trapped inside a little ball was painful than what the Pokemon actually is. He certainly hopes it isn't, because keeping something in such a cramped space seems a little cruel, even to someone like Banjou who never had a pet anything, including pet rocks.]

Do all of these things sleep all day? It was like that when it came out of the ball, napping. I hope it's not hurt or anything. I wouldn't know what to do. Is anyone out there a vet? Can you tell me what this is? It's some kind of beaver but I've never seen one that looks like it before. What kind of does food it needs? I've never had a pet before. I don't want to screw it up.

[He looks awkward for a moment, like he wants to shut the feed off, but has just thought of something else to add.]

The name's Banjou, by the way. Banjou Kazuichi. If anyone answers this... thanks.
Third Person Sample:

Banjou was having a bad day. It had taken him some time to get used to the daily life that Johto seemed so accustomed to, but now that he was starting to consider the place something of a second home, things had to go wrong at some point. And go wrong they did. At least the man had gotten used to his companion since his initial arrival. The Bidoof wasn't that great in battle, but then again neither was Banjou. Still, the little guy seemed content whenever Banjou was challenged to a Pokemon battle, something he was certain he was never going to get used to.

But that wasn't the problem, not now. The problem was that the kid he had been battling with had tripped when his Pikachu ran between his feet and now several large, angry Beedrills were staring down the pair. "Oh crap," Banjou said, taking a slow stride back. "What are those?" Whose idea was it to battle around a hive of gigantic hornets again?

It was his, wasn't it?

He reached for the Pokedex, staring up at them apprehensively before deciding he didn't have time to learn whatever horrible thing it could possibly do to him. Why can't Pokemon be gentle and friendly? Couldn't people keep normal pets? Why couldn't people here have pet fish?

"Oh, cool!" the kid said, puling out an empty Pokeball.

That wasn't the reaction that Banjou was hoping for. Those things looked deadly, and he wasn't exactly in the mood to see a ten year old get attacked by gigantic freak bees. "Get behind me!" he shouted before he could think of a reason not to put himself between the kid and the gigantic bugs. He had to do something, after all. Not every Pokemon out there was going to be friendly, right? And Banjou was nothing if not familiar with things that could potentially kill people.

The kid looked like he wanted to protest, but Banjou wasn't going to give him the chance to argue. The Beedrills charged, all three of them, aiming for the pair and their Pokemon, and Banjou wasn't about to see another kid get hurt because he wasn't strong enough to prevent it. He dived, shoving the kid to the ground. Not hard enough to hurt, though the kid still let out a surprised yelp. "Come on, stay down. They're not gonna hurt you. I won't let them."

Let the damn things sting him; he didn't care, as long as the kid was safe. He steeled himself, ready to feel dozens of stings on his back because he once again had to play hero.

He was helping the kid, saving his life-- at least, he thought was, until the kid's Pikachu decided to shock all of the Beedrills from the sky and onto the ground in a heap. The kid wrestled out from under Banjou, looking like he might cry. "Now look what you've done! They've all fainted! I can't catch them now."

"S-sorry," Banjou murmured, now completely embarrassed.
